friday field trip (from the sketch book).

2010

berkeley, california

my studio hair-do (or shall i say hair-don’t) involves many barrettes, clips, and bobby pins. my pet peeve is having hair hanging in my face while i’m working, especially when my hands are covered in clay or glaze. but luckily, there is a multitude of cute hair accessories out there, and i am never without a pocket full of them.

i love containers, especially glass jars with a lid. i save every jar that enters our home. pickle jars, juice jars, jam jars, mustard jars, . . . i often buy something that i would never even use or eat only because i want the jar that it comes in. my husband doesn’t fully understand why i need so many jars, but he is pretty good about saving them for me, and maybe one day he WILL get it.

new york, new york.

i just spent 5 days in new york. i always find great inspiration there and in the overwhelming amounts of things to do, eat, and see. there are museums + galleries galore and and an endless sea of cute restaurants and boutiques. i even find inspiration on the streets, literally . . .

i used to love the sound of my aunties playing mahjong. i can still hear the clanking of the bone tiles and the chitter chatter of the women. it brings back such fond memories. later, when i learned how to play mahjong myself, i realized what a fun game it was and could completely understand why they would stay up all night playing. i even inherited my family’s old set. mahjong, anyone ?

tea for two.

i recently did a collaboration with jess brown. she makes these incredibly lovely handmade dolls using recycled + antique fabrics/findings. my handmade porcelain picnic set is fully functional, so your little ones can have their own little tea party. the set comes with 1 pitcher, 2 cups and 2 dishes. two for tea anyone ?

spring is springing.

as a californian, i feel that we hardly even experienced a WINTER this year, especially when i spent most of it in the studio designing for SPRING. these new gingham plates are making their debut at TERRAIN. as you might know, i LOVE this store and am honored to have some of my handmade wares featured there. i designed these plates with the spring picnic in mind. so that even if you live in a not-so-california-weathered-place, you can still bring the outside picnic feel INside. have an indoor picnic and get the better of that bad weather !

dig it.

last night i went to the oakland art murmur with my friend pouké. this is really a fun thing to do on the first friday night of every month. 25 galleries are open within walking distance of each other, food trucks, street art, music, people, beautiful weather = loads of fun. i was quite drawn to this installation at hatch gallery.
