figs have been falling on my feet for a while now. from berkeley, to the south of france, to the gold country. they are beautiful little fruits.

this summer has been much about the fig. these are a few of the figs i just made in france.

and this was my new food obsession . . . “fresh figs, a strong bleu cheese, and a drizzle of honey.” i ate this concoction many times a week . . . beautiful and oh so satisfying.

lately, figs have literally been falling at my feet (see HERE and HERE). i also grew up in the central valley where fig orchards were prominent, our closest shopping center was called “fig garden”, and in high school our “gathering” place for weekend nights was a giant fig orchard which was simply known as “the figs.” so you can see why i was feeling compelled to make a few figs here in france. i had never made one before and they kept trying to turn into pears (as i have made 100’s of pears in the past and muscle memory is really “something”) but i think a few of them turned out ok.

right outside of my studio is an ENORMOUS fig tree. when i walked by it today, there was  a little fig sitting on the ground right in front of me. i hadn’t noticed that the tree had started bearing fruit yet and when i looked up to search for more, there was not a single other fig on the tree. i couldn’t help but think that this was some sort of a good sign . . . here is what i discovered:

“The symbolic meanings of figs preceded those of the fig tree: figs connote abundance and initiation. Ancient Egyptian priests ate them at their consecration ceremonies, and the first desert hermits ate them, too. (Their nutritional value is also obvious.) The many seeds in the fig are supposed to signify unity and the universality of true understanding, knowledge, and sometimes faith.”

also that figs epitomize the MEDITERRANEAN, its climate, its food, its way of life . . . and guess who’s going to the mediterranean on monday ? MOI !

the fruit in the mediterranean is incredible. that dry hot heat grows such beautiful sweet fruit. i grew up with figs. in fact, it was an enormous fig orchard where our high school would go to “party.” it was simply known as “the figs.” but here in france (and now that i’m a grown up), i prefer my figs on a baguette with strong cheese and a drizzle of honey.
