new espresso cups in the works.

i’m doing 3 shows next month: the palo alto clay + glass festival, renegade los angeles, and renegade san francisco. kind of crazy, yes (i will be needing a LOT of espresso), but i figured as long as i was making work for one show, why not make a little bit more and turn it into 3 shows ? plus, i intend to take the months of august + september OFF. may was the making month, june will be the glazing month and july will be the selling month. i have a LOT of brand new work for these shows, so stay tuned . . .

i’ve always been drawn to pears. the shape is so alluring to me. i refer to them a lot in my work, sculpturally and decoratively. i was recently asked to be a guest artist for the *button club.* this is the artwork i did and below is the button tanya made from it.

if you are into “buttons” (though they are more like “pins”), this is a fun club to join . . .
check it out right here.

clay.

i l o v e clay in the greenware state . . . when it is still called “clay.” after it is fired, is when it turns into “pottery.” i just realized that this must be why i have always (subliminally?) called myself a “clay artist” rather than a “potter.” and as all of my potter friends will attest to, i don’t even really like pottery. i know, strange, but true. all of my pottery posse are true potter’s potters and really into pottery and the whole pottery scene. but as usual, i am a bit of an outcast. i’ve always been the black sheep. which must be why i love sheep so much . . . but that is a whole other story.

i went to an opening at trax gallery last weekend and purchased this cup made by robert brady. i love it. the drawing looks JUST like my husband. i’ll drink to that !

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

new york, new york

august 2009

i had the most amazing cocktails in the east village, at a bar called death & company. sort of a morbid name, yes . . . the drinks have a creative twist on pre-prohibition cocktails. this bar is dark and moody and stocked with an array of rare, aged, brown liquors (my favorite liquor color). the talented mixologists concoct the most incredible drinks i have ever sipped, layered with flavors that dance in your mouth. and the drinks come with ONE gigantic ice cube. classy.

have a seat.

i have a real *thing* for chairs. in 1995 i even opened a restaurant in san francisco and called it “café chaise.” i love old beautiful chairs, i love to sketch chairs. i collect chairs. i enjoy sitting on chairs . . . let’s face it, chairs are an essential object in our daily lives. and so are plates. so i have combined the two and am working on a new series of chair plates.

you can see them here. here. and here.

kick it.

whitney smith + her hunky husband gave me this BEAUTIFUL old kick wheel (andrew found it on the STREET !) . . . it is truly an exquisite piece of furniture. i never really “took” to the wheel. while everyone in class was fighting for the good wheels and eagerly learning to center, i was always off in the corner, secretly hand building by myself (though i do LOVE to coil build tall vessels ON a wheel). but now that i HAVE this wheel, there is incentive to throw (you can see the tiny bowl on it that i just threw, you can also see wilma’s butt). who knows? a year from now i might have a whole new line of work. stay tuned.

i drove down to fresno to visit my mom this weekend, and i spotted a field of sheep (i have a deep love for sheep). i had to pull over to see the cutest lambs EVER. and they had the sweetest little voices . . . “bbaaahhhh . . . bah ahhhh ahhhhhhh”

they took one look at me and they started to walk AWAY . . .

then suddenly they all RAN away as fast as they could.

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

san francisco, ca

2005

i love drawing candy, maybe even more than i like eating it (i have a savory tooth, not a sweet tooth). i can spend hours in a confectionery with my sketchbook. the smells, the visuals, . . . pure sweet heaven. i sketched these at recchiuti confections in san francisco. michael recchiuti makes some of the most amazing looking AND tasting sweet treats you will ever put in your mouth. perhaps your sweet mom would like something sweet for mother’s day?
