the prize jewel . . .
yesterday i had lunch with one of my all time favorite people, jeanine payer, and her 5.5 month old latest and greatest creation, WILLIAM !!! what a little golden nugget ! he is the cutest and calmest baby ever. perhaps it is all the poetry she read to him in gestation? she makes juggling a jewelry empire and mothering a child seem SO simple.
the first and last bracelets are my favorite jeanine payers’ that i wear EVERY single day !

ready . . . set . . .
. . . GLAZE !!!!!!!!! our kilns are fired up and we are glazing like little maniacs here at the studio. if only there were 8 more hours in the day, for the potter’s job is NEVER DONE !!!!
but we WILL be ready for our grand sale on may 3rd + 4th. come down and get ’em while they’re hot !!!!

a bad fit.
i’ve had a lot of requests for covered salt cellars, but am having a BIG FIT over them. failure after failure . . . EVERY single one. the cracking, the bad fitting lids, and the always dreaded “oxides jumping out of the imprinted lettering.” i’m hoping to get it right, someday soon. the good news is that instead of dumping these into the ocean, which i SO want to do, they will be on super sale at our SUPER seconds sale at fourth & clay on may 3rd + 4th. seconds on fourth is a BIG EVENT featuring josie, diana, whitney, me + 2 fantastic textile artists. items will be up to 75% off !!!! check back soon for more details.

today rebecca and i went to the very grand alameda flea market. i’m always drawn to the box of ceramic doll heads. they are so scary, beautiful, and morbid all at the same time.
i bought a handsome set of crisp JW embroidered linen napkins
for my handsome JW.
and a handful of cutlery for 50 cents each.

diablo magazine.
i was one of the lucky potters to be featured in the april issue of diablo magazine. the article is about the incredibly happening clay scene going on in west berkeley, california. the areas around 4th and 5th streets are virtually saturated with fantastic ceramic artists . . . and by the way, we aren’t ALL birkenstock-wearing-hippies, either ! to read the article, click HERE.

chaat and chat.
yesterday my friend april higashi paid me a studio visit and then we went to lunch at the ever delicious vik’s indian restaurant (which is 2 blocks from my studio). if you’ve never been there before, you just don’t know what you are missing !!! it’s worth a visit to my studio JUST to be able to hop over for a quick and tasty meal. april and i worked in design for esprit de corps about a million years ago, and now she is a very fancy jewelry designer and i play with mud. her studio/gallery is in berkeley quite near to mine. check her out when you’re checking me out !

spring forward.
are these not the most beautiful things you’ve seen all day ? they are growing in our new “back yard.” did i mention that i am FINALLY moved into our new townhouse in emeryville ? i feel like i have a new lease on life. don’t get me wrong, i love san francisco, but after 20 years there, i am ready for a more peaceful, calm, clean, and easy existence. and what’s not to love ? we are 2 minutes away from the water where miss wilma frolics everyday, i can hop on my bike for some fresh morning air and exercise withOUT having to fight the city traffic, smells and danger, people are actually neighborly, the weather is exquisite, i am 5 minutes from my studio, and i can be back in the city in 10 minutes if there is no traffic.
people who think that emeryville is all about ikea are wrong. we are on the other side of the tracks where we can’t even see it . . . . unless we want to . . . . and believe me, sometimes we do !

in the beginning.
these are the very first bowls that i ever made, 15 years ago. my work hasn’t really changed all that much from then to now . . . and i’m not exactly sure WHAT that implies ?! all i know is that i could never achieve that refined perfection in my work . . . that glossy finish that only potter’s potters have. i suppose my work simply reflects my personality AND my fred flintstone way of life . . . . W I L M A !!!!!!!
