the full moon last night . . .

“…spooky effects have been ascribed to the phases of the moon….But when the statistics are redone properly, the correlation with lunar phase always evaporates….Yet many sensible people—including police officers and emergency room staff—continue to believe otherwise.” —Steven Strogatz

i took this photo from our balcony last night. it was a particularly beautiful and eerie moon . . . and i am one of those believers of all of the lunar effects.

spring is just around the corner and i am longing for some pretty colours. i made a new batch of salt + pepper bowls and added a hint of colour. though my work will remain mostly white, i am testing new colours to spruce up my work for spring.

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

pacific palisades, california
february 2010

i recently went to visit a good friend whose house is FILLED with beautiful 18th century french furniture + art. it was like living in a museum. ever so charming. i spent a good part of my stay walking around the house with my sketchbook . . . and another good part drinking champagne and catching up in front of one of the many fireplaces ! this was a foot stool that i adored . . . the colour was fabulous.

spoon fed.

i have a real *thing* for spoons. to me, they are very nurturing and soothing. maybe because of the sensual shape. maybe because it is the first utensil we are fed with when we are a baby. maybe because the foods we eat with a spoon are comfort foods . . . soup, oatmeal, ice cream, pudding, etc. . .

the spoon has been used as an eating utensil since the stone age. it is believed that the prehistoric people used shells or chips of wood as spoons. imagine the lip splinters . . . ouch !

i am working on a series of spoons. here are just a few of them in the greenware state. check back in a few weeks for the finished product.

fog linen catalogue.

this is one of my images that will be featured in the new fog linen catalogue/magazine. this is a wonderful new catalogue that shows 13 creators in their natural habitat, using fog linen products in their daily lives. each artist also answers a short interview. the catalogue is called ‘around FOG LINEN’ and it is a fantastic publication. i love sneak peeking into other peoples lives . . . don’t you ?!

you can order one of these collectable catalogues right here.

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

guangzhou, china

november 2003

this sunday, february 14th, marks 2 big holidays . . . valentine’s day and the start of the Chinese New Year. it is the year of the TIGER (which happens to be MY year). it is a chinese tradition to eat long noodles on this day to signify a long and prosperous life. because of this, the noodles are never cut or shortened in the belief that it would be bad luck and would shorten that person’s life. they are served long and whole, like other foods served during the Chinese New Year, since the Chinese also believe that presenting food whole is symbolic for “completeness.”

super flea market sunday.

sunday was the BIG alameda flea market. it was the PERFECT day. the weather was warm and sunny. the smell of hot dogs graced the air. and it was NOT crowded, as it was super bowl sunday (whatever THAT means).

there was a lot of inspiration to be found in the old junk. but, as usual, i was mostly drawn to the french themed items.

. . . and my only purchase were these thick linen monogramed napkins that i can’t seem to own enough of.

i am the kind of girl who hates wearing street clothes. i would live in slippers and pajama bottoms if i could. the minute i come home, the clothes + shoes come off, and i do a quick costume change into the jammies + slippers. aaahhhhhhhhhh . . . there’s no place like home.

go ahead and say it.

it seems like so many people around me are falling in love. spring is just around the corner and love is definitely in the air. in honor of this, i’ve made some new ring bearer dishes . . . just in case some of you REALLY want to say “I DO.”

i have always been drawn to the moon. i feel connected to it, ruled by it, inspired by it, and moved by it. i truly believe that i am lunar powered. when there is a full moon, and for days prior, i literally feel different, like a buzz coursing through my veins. in 1992 i started keeping a moon journal, where i draw, sketch, and sometimes paint the moon. i love how it changes night after night. and then recently, i found out that i was actually born during a full moon . . . and now it all makes perfect sense.

(tomorrow night is the full moon)
