friday field trip (from the sketch book).

11 november 10

emeryville, ca

last week i went to the launch party for a new and FABULOUS magazine called ANTHOLOGY. this is a wonderful new lifestyle print magazine that i am loving. it is the perfect size and printed on really nice recycled paper. they threw a fantastic party and served killer cocktails AND handed out little boxes filled with these delicious candies, to boot. what’s NOT to love about anthology ?!

we rented a house for the fourth of july weekend in sutter creek. it was such an appreciable and tranquil getaway. the couch had these handsome pillows on it. i loved the orange + grey color combo.

i love cheese. the stinkier, the stronger flavor, the better. i also love to draw cheese. i drew these standing in front of the dean & delucca cheese case in soho. they always have the most handsome selection of cheeses anywhere. i could stand there for days drawing and nibbling on cheese (i would so love to be locked in that store after hours !).

these cast porcelain squash were displayed under a glass coffee table at the crosby street hotel in soho. i found them particularly beautiful and delicate. i am back east right now on a very much needed and successful inspirational journey. i started in new york . . . philadelphia . . . washington dc . . .

san francisco, california

2006

these are some rough sketches i did for small square design, a letterpress company that i co-founded with my friend basak. she later took over the business . . . and now she is taking a leave-of-absence in TURKEY (for at least a year).

and this is one of the notebooks from this series.

i am not much of a “bread person.” it seems like it fills me up and sits in my stomach for too long. i’d much rather eat something savory and flavorful. BUT i do enjoy a warm baguette fresh out of the oven with a pat of butter every now and then . . . who doesn’t ?!
Monday, October 11, 2010

there is a community organic garden right across the street from our house. i go there regularly to see what’s growing and to smell the succulent aromas. it is my little sanctuary, complete with a picnic table to enjoy a meal at or to sit and sketch.

this flower was such a vibrant color . . .

and this one was pretty wondrous as well.

i love gardens, gardening, gardening tools, gardening attire, anything that has to do with the garden, . . . it’s such a gratifying way to really get down to earth and back to nature. perhaps something we could all stand to have more of in our hectic and frenzied lives. i, for one, am planning to take it down a notch come january . . . stay tuned.

september 2010

this flute was on display at the bennington museum. i love this museum. it was founded in 1852 and has the largest collection of gradma moses paintings (whom i adore), a fabulous pottery collection, old tools and musical instruments, plus so much more. as a flautist myself, i was particularly drawn to the simplicity of this old flute.

september 2010

we are in vermont for most of september. every summer we come here for a month to get away from the hustle + bustle of our busy lives in the city. it is exceptionally beautiful and peaceful and calm here and easy to get back in touch with nature, which is crucial to my well being. this squash was grown by my brother-in-law who is a phenomenal organic farmer and can grow anything. he brings us large amounts of his exquisite crops. life in vermont is pretty close to perfect.
