friday field trip (from the sketch book).

emeryville, ca

november 2009

these might just be the perfect studio shoes. not only are they super comfy, but they are plastic/rubber and can be hosed down at the end of the day. and though they are not the cutest shoes in town (bordering on perhaps the ugliest ?), they add a bit of height and are easy to slip on and off . . . 2 of my shoe requirements. plus it doesn’t hurt that they are dirt cheap !

i feel like the weather is starting to turn already. the leaves are falling off the trees and the wind is starting to blow. i’m almost ready to pull out this scarf that i bought at a trunk show last year. it is made of old cashmere sweaters and it doesn’t itch the neck (pet peeve). it seems as though we were shorted a summer this year. but we do have the indian summer to look forward to in october, right ?

from bed in emeryville, ca

anyone who knows me, knows i am highly un-technologically inclined. i was the last person on the block to get a cell phone. the last person i know to get a computer. the last person to get a laptop and do away with dial-up, etc . . . so when my husband presented me with an iPad last week, i wasn’t sure what i was going to do with it, though it is certainly VERY cute. then yesterday i discovered sketchbook pro. and now i think i am in love. this is the best thing i have learned in years (though still learning, as it’s only been a day).

i am in a cup show this november, so cups are on my mind.

i’ve been sketching + painting right onto my pottery and combining my 2 great loves. sketching right on the clay feels so permanent and set in stone, which can be quite daunting at first. but nothing that can’t be thrown against the wall at the end of the year !

this is one of my favorite quotes from “the little prince.”

this is a new series i am working on: sketches on thin slabs of porcelain which are then glazed + fired. they are framed in shadow boxes (i brought this one to my last show, and it sold). i am trying to move away from functional art, and i love the idea of turning clay into my sketchbook. plus, being a production potter is really taking a toll on me physically AND mentally ! now i just want to draw.

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

san francisco, ca

2005

i love the look of the old fashion candies, they are like jewels. these were at miette in the ferry building, one of the cutest bakeries you will ever step foot in. these stick candies bring me back to a sweet + fond memory of childhood. i LOVED candy, as my dentist would gladly attest to. but later in life, my sweet tooth turned into a savory tooth. now, i much prefer the savory, and my sweet tooth is practically nil. but the sweet memories still live on . . .

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

sutter creek, ca

july 2010

i bought these shoes at a beautiful store in sutter creek called “the antique gardener.” they are rubber gardening shoes. who doesn’t love an orange shoe ? and i always enjoy an easy slip-on-and-off shoe, as i tend to take them off whilst sitting at my desk or at a table (i love shoes, but i hate wearing them). now all i need is a garden.

4th of july 2010

we went to sutter creek for the fourth of july weekend. the entire gold country is extraordinarily beautiful and full of history. it was a much needed get away, complete with antiquing, dining, and resting.

guest artist: MAIRA KALMAN !

last night, jeanine + i went to the opening of maira kalman‘s show at the contemporary jewish museum. it was BREATHTAKING seeing her books come to life, i think my heart actually skipped a beat. i snapped this ONE blurry photo before quickly being told N O T to take pictures! damn. we even got to meet maira (i actually met her 18 years ago and she looks exactly the same). she is small, funny and quick witted, just like her work. the show is up for 2 months and i will be visiting it a LOT.

jeanine and i were somewhat star-struck, like 2 teenage girls. we came bearing gifts. jeanine gave her a silver bracelet . . . and i gave her a bag of rocks (how embarressing).

santa margherita, italy.

driving in santa margherita ligure. the italian riviera is so beautiful and vibrant. and i think the people here might be more relaxed, so the driving is slightly less scary than the rest of italy.

costa brava, spain.

2005

in 2005 i biked through northern spain, what a beautiful part of the world. spain is definitely one of my top 3 favorite countries. this was lunch at a very charming restaurant called CAN QUEL, which we just happened to stumble upon. this is my favorite type of meal. so simple yet so delicious.

vermont.

february 2006

i like to drink copious amounts of tea, and have never met a teacup big enough to suit my needs. but i am completely sold on the mason jar. the shape of the neck keeps the tea nice and HOT + it holds the perfect amount of liquid quantity. it’s tea for two (or three) in one cup.
