try-colour.

these are the THREE different clay bodies i used here in france . . .

1. limoges porcelain = super creamy, lovely and wonderful to work with. beautiful + very white when fired. though i didn’t throw with it, my fellow residents RAVED about how easy was to throw. but it shrinks and warps like MAD.

2. spanish white clay = super groggy and easy to hand build with. has a very durable feel when fired. but didn’t care that much for the colour of the clay after firing . . . sort of a yellow/oatmeal colour (especially since i like the natural clay to show through in my work).

3. spanish black clay = super groggy and forgiving when coil building. loved the wetness of the clay that dried pretty quickly (great for coil building something tall). fires to a beautiful black/brown. but doesn’t take colour very well (i.e. . . underglazes or slip) and messy, but not as messy as some dark clays i’ve worked with. LOVED the look of white words on this clay.

these COLOURS . . .

Saturday, June 18, 2011

the colours in the town of vallauris are so beautiful to me. very muddy and very bright at the same time. i’ll paint the flower petals in colours that reflect this town.

i wanted this vessel to look like an old cement wall, as i am inspired by the decrepitness of this town. i find the old facades and the wear and tear of the buildings so incredibly beautiful. so much history. so much life. this is the kind of thing that really stirs my soul.

here is the invite to our show in vallauris, france. these images are of work in progress, but i love the rawness and the way they all look together. we 3 residents have very different styles that seem to compliment each other, and we have all become fast friends, to boot. if you happen to be in the area, i highly recommend coming to our opening (even if it’s just for this).

black is beautiful.

this spanish black clay is such a treat to work with and to look at. to me, it resembles a chocolate candy bar . . . and if you know me at all, you know how i feel about chocolate.

very unCANNY.

this is the extremely lovely laurence duarte. she recently tried to order something from my online shop, but i responded that i was going to france for a month and couldn’t do it. turns out she lives in CANNES . . . 10 MINUTES from where i was going to be. seriously, WHAT are the chances of THAT ?

so yesterday she invited me for lunch at her incredibly beautiful home overlooking the entire city of cannes. simply breathtaking.

she served much of the lunch on dishes of mine she had purchased in provincetown (very surreal and what a SMALL world, to be in france eating from my own dishes).

this is the spectacular view from her back yard.

and as if THAT wasn’t enough . . . there were TWO 3 month old jack russell terriers that pretty much sat in my lap for the entire 4 hour lunch.

am I the luckiest girl, or what ?

spoon fed.

i’ve been making a lot of spoons here in france and i think it might be inspired by all of the fabulous food i’ve been eating. the strange thing is that my spoons keep getting BIGGER. i’m hoping this has no correlation between my food intake or waist line.

(click on the spoon for a closer peek)
“i find this pleasure so sweet and charming.”

it’s the small things.

why is it that everything looks better when it is small ? my favorite children’s clothing store is cotton sheep in hayes valley. they have the MOST beautiful children’s clothes from japan. so perfect and bite size. i always ask the owner why they can’t make them just a tad bigger to fit me, and we always laugh and agree at the answer: “because it wouldn’t be CUTE if it was any bigger !” well, the same goes for these little tea cups that i designed for jess brown. if they were any bigger, they would lose their cuteness factor for sure.

i’m sTaCkeD !

i have a new series of thin porcelain plates making their debut at MAC’s very chic + beautiful new space in THE YELLOW BUILDING. this is the grooviest new place in sf to shop, dine, drink coffee, and buy wine ! this stunning historical building is the epitome of one-stop-shopping . . . i highly recommend a visit.

it’s true. i love a squeeze of lime (or lemon) on almost everything. i keep our kitchen well stocked with these citrus staples. and every time i squeeze one on my food, i look at my husband and he says with a knowing nod, “i know, i know, . . . everything tastes better with a squeeze of lemon.”

i truly do believe in wishes coming true . . . well, it’s actually more like *the power of positive thinking.* i have “wished” for so many things in my life that have panned out in ways that weren’t ME forcing the issue or “trying” to make happen. i think there is SO MUCH to be said about positive energy and just believing, it can really shift things. and one day that “something” will just land in your lap when you least expect it . . . like this.
