oh picasso.

we were so lucky to get a private tour of MADOURA, the studio/factory where picasso produced ceramics here in valauris, france. it was amazing and so informative.

they didn’t allow photos to be taken in his actual studio workspace, but i begged and they let me take some if i promised not to publish them . . . but if you visit me at my studio, i can show them to you in person ! his studio was so inspiring to me.

this is the kiln picasso’s work was fired in !

seeing beauty.

Rae Dunn
the town where i am doing my residency in france, vallauris, is a very poor and run down town. it is filled with potters and other artists.  the city council is trying to revive this little town and luckily they are huge supporters of the arts. this is a typical street in vallauris. very old and worn, but to me, so hauntingly beautiful.

at peace.

i love vallauris at night. this is the view of the moon taken from my bedroom window.

there are no words to describe the peacefulness i feel here.

 just me + my moon.

vallauris.

i finally made it down to the south of france to start my residency, and it’s as if i had never left. the weather here is just perfect. it’s like coming home again . . . i grew up in fresno, california which has mediterranean climate and so it feels subliminally familiar to me. i am ready to get my hands dirty and to see what inspires me. this is where i will be living for the next 5 weeks . . . top floor.

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

june 2011

vallauris, france

this is picasso’s man with a sheep that stands in the main square in vallauris. i would pass by it many times a day. it is so powerful, you can’t walk by and not notice it.

“in the context of the symbol of sacrifice, picasso’s sculpture of the man with the sheep, of 1942-1943, assumes a unique position in his life work. it was created during those anguished years of the second world war of which churchill wrote that “everyone realized how near were death and ruin.” after the war picasso donated a bronze cast of this sculpture to the town of vallauris as a memorial to the resistance fighters.” (art journal vol.32. no. 3. spring 1962)
